VILLAGE RE-GENERATION WORK

SYNERGY is carrying out village re-generation work with Navalady village. The village was affected by the tsunami disaster. The remaining victims spent many a months in the camps in Thirayimadu, but around 150 families have returned to live in the village. The work involves helping these residents to settle down and start afresh.

The residents are encouraged to form groups of 10 making a total of 10 groups. A committee consisting of Chair, Treasurer and Secretary are elected. The group of 10 hold regular meetings and discuss issues affecting them in their normal life. They examine the problems and the choices open to overcome them. The group makes the decision and delegates asks. In this manner they learn to take control of their lives.

In Navalady, many young children find themselves isolated from other children and require learning and tuition facilities. Widows too seek income generation programmes. Young families too would like some activity to help them be more positive about their future.

The groups of 10 also receives further training in human rights, social mobilisation, parenting and conflict resolution. They also learn new skills to set up small cottage industries and receive necessary support (training and financial help) to bring their dreams to fruition.
